AERTEC develops a revolutionary portable device for aircraft ground testing

The prototype has been developed in collaboration with Airbus Defense and Space and within the framework of the PASSARO project, of the European Clean Sky 2 program

The Aerópolis-based company Aertec has developed a system that will revolutionize the way in which aircraft ground tests are carried out until now. It is portable, wireless, and intended as a much more cost-effective solution for both aviation and MRO production.

In the aircraft industrialization process, ground tests are a relevant phase to verify the correct operation of all its systems (fuel, hydraulic, pneumatic, oxygen, fire extinguishing, flight control, mission, etc.).

One of the components of these ground test systems are the so-called aircraft interface modules. They are equipment that stimulates the aircraft systems and collects its response to process and assess its operation thanks to a computer-assisted test system. They are essential tests to validate that the systems of an airplane are working correctly.

The current interface modules are made up of multiple electronic cards integrated in a rack (cabinet that integrates, in a reduced space, all kinds of computer, electronic or communications devices) that manages the exchange of signals between the ground test system and The aircraft. It is an expensive and complex procedure with large requirements for space, cabling, human resources, and dedicated facilities.

A team of AERTEC Solutions engineers, in collaboration with Airbus Defense and Space, have been investigating in recent years how to ensure that these tests can be carried out in a more profitable and efficient way. This development has been carried out within the framework of the Clean Sky 2 Program, within the PASSARO project (capabilities for innovative Structural and functional testing of AeROstructures).

Thanks to its small size, its portability and its versatility, Dongle AIM will revolutionize the way in which aircraft ground tests are carried out until now.

The result has been a portable equipment for the realization of tests for the functional verification on the ground of the airplanes, denominated Dongle AIM. This small device can be connected directly to the aircraft by cable or wirelessly and test at any location, avoiding the need to move the aircraft to specialized facilities.

This portable test set can be set up to send and receive a wide variety of signals from discrete or analog to aircraft specific communication protocols (ARINC-429).

The Dongle AIM prototype has already successfully passed laboratory tests and the first aircraft tests will be carried out at the end of the year.

Thanks to its small size, its portability and its versatility, Dongle AIM will revolutionize the way in which aircraft ground tests are carried out until now. It is a much more profitable, faster and more agile solution that will help to optimize the test tasks associated with the field of aeronautical production and aircraft maintenance (MRO).
